Contemporary off the discharge of his eighth studio album, John Legend sat down with Billboard‘s Deputy Director of R&B and Hip-Hop, Carl Lamarre, to debate the inspiration behind his new LP, fittingly titled Legend.
“It represents a lot of who I’m as an artist, all the artists who impressed me, all of the music that I really like. It’s a stage identify that’s been following me for nearly 20 years, and I really feel like I’m able to embrace it,” the EGOT winner defined, earlier than revealing that he made the album all through 2021 after his “Feeling Good” efficiency at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. “A part of it was fueled by that optimism and that sense that issues have been going to get higher,” he mentioned.
In reference to a music title on the brand new album, when requested if he feels that he has reached his “Destiny,” Legend replied, “I really feel like that is what I’m purported to be doing. I’ve been wanting to do that since I used to be a child, and I’m so grateful that I’m residing my dream out proper now. I really feel like, man, pinch myself. That is wonderful.”
Afterward within the interview, Legend touched on his difficult relationship along with his previous musical collaborator, Kanye West, who ran for president in 2020. “He was upset with me that I didn’t help his presidential candidacy,” Legend recalled. “I don’t actually know a approach round that. I’m not going to take again the truth that I didn’t help his presidency, I’m not going to apologize for that as a result of I imagine that was the best factor for me to do. If meaning he doesn’t wish to be pals with me anymore, so be it.”
He continued, “We’ve got nice music that we made collectively. He helped make me who I’m as an artist and I’ll always remember that. We simply not seeing eye to eye proper now and that’s life.”
