In this new entry in our ‘Diamonds In The Rough’ category, we would like to introduce you to upcoming artist Danny Groenland and his brand new album titled burning rome.
Dublin-based soul artist Danny Groenland is set to make waves with his brand-new album burning rome, a powerful concept project that blends deep social commentary with the infectious energy of classic soul, funk, and jazz. To celebrate this monumental release, Groenland is bringing his 10-piece band to The Sugar Club on May 9th, promising an unforgettable night of music that is both thought-provoking and irresistibly danceable.
A Soundtrack for Urgent Times
Inspired by legends like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, burning rome takes a bold stance on some of the most pressing issues of our time, including climate change, war, inequality, homelessness, and police brutality. It’s music that speaks to both the mind and the feet—an urgent call to action wrapped in lush instrumentation, dynamic grooves, and soul-stirring vocals.
“They say that Nero played while Rome burned,” says Groenland. “I suspect the citizens whose homes were on fire didn’t see it that way. There’s a time and a place, they’d have said. Please help us put the fire out.”
While the themes are serious, the album carries a message of optimism and hope. “These songs come from a variety of feelings—love, anger, empathy, sorrow, fear, and hope. I do have hope, otherwise, I wouldn’t have recorded it. I have faith in humanity.”
An Unmatched Musical Experience
Backing Groenland’s vision is a stellar ensemble of top-tier musicians, including a full horn section and a powerhouse lineup of vocalists. Tracks like “chip in”, “runway”, and “olive trees” feature an array of talent, blending elements of jazz, funk, and protest music to create anthems of resilience and change.
Standout songs include “mr loaded”, which takes on themes of economic disparity, “somewhere”, a hauntingly beautiful ballad featuring cello and flute, and world outside, a moving closer that captures the essence of unity and transformation.
